That Egg is Mine! by Liz Goulet Dubois

4.5 stars Children’s Reader

Whose egg, is it?  This beautiful blue egg with white spots could be either Duck’s or Cluck’s because these friends each lay eggs and they both have these beautiful blue markings on them.

Duck and Cluck each give an account of why the egg is theirs but it’s when the egg hatches open, the friends truly find out who really owns the egg.  A big surprise for both Duck and Cluck.

It’s a combination of a graphic novel and picture book as some pages are made up of text boxes and others are not.  This makes for a great book for a young reader with simple text and large print.   The illustrations are colorful, they complement the text, and readers can reference them to tell the story.   I liked how Duck trusted Cluck to look at the egg but when Cluck took off carrying the egg, the frantic look on Duck’s face said it all.  Later, as the egg cracks open, the faces on the friends as they stare at the new baby are comical and the ending is funny.   I think this is a great book on solving problems and listening.  Thank you to NetGalley, Sourcebooks Kids and Liz Goulet Dubois for an arc copy of this book which I received in exchange for an honest opinion. 4.5 stars

Mickey Friendship Tales by Disney

5 stars Children’s Picture Book

We’ve got a Mickey fan in our house so when I happened upon these 5 books in 1 at the library, I grabbed it. We already have one of the books, but the other 4 books were new ones to us and now, 3 of them, we have read almost every day. I might just be buying a copy of this 160-page book for our house.

Like I mentioned before, there are 5 stories in this book: Mickey’s Perfecto Day, Ski Trippin’, Donald’s Stinky Day, Minnie-rella, and A Hot-Dog Day. Each story is around 30 pages long with bright, colorful illustrations, easy-to-read text, featuring Mickey and his friends. Ski Trippin’ in the story we haven’t read much which means we haven’t read it every day.

In Mickey’s Perfecto Day, the gang is in Spain where Donald is going to sing with his friends on stage. It’s going to be a perfecto day. Then, a rose lands in Minnie’s Daily Driver which causes a baby bull to follow Minnie EVERYWHERE! Donald is off to lunch with Daisy and his friends where he eats something spicy and oh no! Donald loses his voice. Who will sing on stage? What happens to Minnie when the baby bull catches up to her and Mickey?

In Ski Trippin’, Daisy forgets how to ski. Daisy packs everything (and I mean everything!) on this skiing trip so check out their car. She falls, slips, crashes and just can’t ski once they get on the snow. Mickey, Goofy, Donald, and Minnie try to give Daisy pointers on how to ski. Pete even helps as the big ski race is starting. Soon all the friends are skiing down the hill in the race, even Daisy!

In Donald’s Stinky Day, Donald is headed to the park to help Daisy when he spots a dog barking at something in the tree. Thinking it’s a cat up in the tree, Donald stops to help the cat after the dog is pulled away. That cat ends up being a skunk! That skunk likes Donald and goes with him everywhere. Donald doesn’t want the skunk for a pet and the skunk stinks. The skunk just wants to be Donald’s friend, but everyone is afraid of the skunk and now, they are afraid to be around Donald. Donald tries to get rid of the skunk, but in the end, that was not a good decision,

In Minnie-rella, it’s a story like Cinderella only a lot different. Mickey wants to surprise Minnie so they try to keep her busy with different jobs. When she falls asleep, Clarabelle (fairy godmother) visits her and gets her ready for Prince Mickey’s ball. A cute story. When Mickey gives Minnie her present after her nap, it was super sweet. Of course, at the end, they do the Hot Dog Dance!

In A Hot-Dog Day, Minnie is planning a picnic for her friends and makes a list of what she needs. Minnie starts getting things ready and soon, her friends start to help in the process without her knowledge. I loved how everyone came together to help make it a group effort.
A great group of stories. 5 stars

The Berenstain Bears Meet the Easter Bunny by Mike Berenstain

2 stars Children’s Level 1 Reader

I was looking forward to reading this book with my grandsons but I think we all felt disappointed in the story.   I was confused with the whole story and I thought the Berenstain Bears had better storylines than this.  My grandson’s (ages 3 and 3.5) read it with me a few times and boy, they had some questions.  They wanted to know why the Easter Bunny didn’t come the first time, where the bunnies came from when the Easter Bunny needed help, and where the bunnies were taking the candy at the end of the story.   From reading the story and the looking at the illustrations, I had no idea so we just came up with some answers together.

The story is about Easter, a holiday that the Berenstain Family loves.   It’s Easter morning and the family can’t find any Easter eggs.   They hunt around the house and no one can find any traces that the Easter Bunny has been there.  That’s ok!  Papa Bear will dress up like the Easter Bunny and hide the eggs.  If only, it was that easy.

Papa Bear tries but he can’t take the place of the Easter Bunny so the family takes off to search for the actual Easter Bunny.   They locate his house and each of the children tell him that they need him, in their own way.   Why he didn’t come earlier, I have no idea.  He must act quickly if he’s going to try to save this Easter.

My older children grew up reading the Berenstain Bears so I was excited to start my grandchildren on them but this book fell short on my expectations.  I remember reading stories to my own children and they had life lessons or principles in them.  I still have all their original books.  I felt this book was self-centered.  I love Easter, I love candy and eggs.  I didn’t get any so someone get some for me.  Daddy tried but he didn’t do a good enough job so I’m still not happy.  Find the Easter Bunny and tell him I need him to get me some candy and eggs.  He worked hard.  I got my candy and eggs and now, I am happy.   That’s just my opinion but what about individuals who didn’t get any Easter candy?  Why didn’t the Easter Bunny come earlier?  Did he oversleep?  Could they have brought something for the Easter Bunny – a carrot, a scooter so he can make faster deliveries?  Not a good fit for me  2 stars

Peppa’s New Friend adapted by Michael Petranek

4 stars Children’s Level 1 Reader

After reading this title with my grandson’s,  I realize that it’s just like the video.  It’s a great, little story staring Peppa and her friends.

While Peppa and her friends are at school, they get a visitor.  Everyone is excited to meet this new individual.  If they enjoy their day at school, they will be joining Peppa and her friends every day.  Mandy Mouse fits right in with everyone at school and her day is going great.  Having to use a wheelchair,  Mandy Mouse is used to her own independence but sometimes, it’s nice to have a friend along for the ride.  Will Mandy Mouse decide she wants to be a part of Madame Gazelle’s classroom?

The illustrations are bright and bold which look great on the glossy pages.  The black simple text font is easy to read and reads like a Level 1 book.   Great book. 4 stars
